Residential Architecture: Master suite, kitchen and family room addition

Location: Wheaton, IL

The existing kitchen in this home lacked upper cabinet storage space and had an inefficient design layout for the current owners. The existing first floor also lacked a large gathering space for entertaining friends and family, as well as having a multipurpose area for their growing teenagers. On the second floor they wanted to upgrade their existing master bathroom and add a den / office space. The resulting design offers an updated and efficient kitchen layout that addresses their storage needs, food preparation areas, and modern amenities. The new kitchen also anchors the existing dining room and remodeled breakfast area which then leads into a new 21’x15’ family room addition flanked by a screened porch and small deck. This gives the owners added flexibility for any family gatherings or parties any time of the year. The overall design also included adding a second floor den off of the master bedroom. Considering the existing two story mass is located on a narrow lot, the design intent of the addition was to break down the large mass and create a more intimate relationship between the user and the architecture, as well as providing more windows for natural lighting and taking advantage of the natural views of the back yard.
